Thunderbird Email Client Setup

tbird
Download Thunderbird

Thunderbird is a free program that lets you download your mail to your computer. Begin by going to the Thunderbird download page http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/ and click the button that says "Free Download".  Save the file to a folder of your choosing, or as I prefer to do, to the desktop.  When the download is complete navigate to the desktop (or wherever you've saved the file) and double click on it. The file name is "Thunderbird Setup _ _ _.exe"

• Maximize the window by double clicking anywhere in the blue bar at the top of the window. Then on the menu bar choose "Tools", then "Account Settings..."

• In the Account Wizard window, make sure the radio button "Email Account" is selected, then click "Next"

• In the Identity window, put your name, or whatever name you want to appear in the "from" line of your emails. This box can be left blank if you prefer. Then put your email address including the @thepracticalromantic.com extension. In the example I've used my name and email address. Then click "Next"

• In the Server Information window, the radio button should indicate "POP" (which stands for Post Office Protocol in case you wondered). In the Incoming Server box type "thepracticalromantic.com" without the quotes. In the Outgoing Server box also type "thepracticalromantic.com" without the quotes. Cross your fingers, you'll see why in a little bit.

The "Use Global Inbox" checkmark is for organizing mail from more than one account.  If  you use Thunderbird to check more than one address and want all results to show in a common window, leave this box checked.  If you want separate windows for each account, clear the checkbox.

Click "Next"

• In the User Names window, in the "Incoming User Name" box, type your email address WITHOUT the @thepracticalromantic.com extension. Do the same in the "Outgoing User Name" box. Click "Next"

• In the Account Name window, type a reference name for this account. This is to let you keep track of accounts if you use Thunderbird to check more than one mailbox. It can be anything you want, I prefer my email name. Click "Next"

• You're presented with a Congratulations screen. Look it over and see if you've made any mistakes.  Fix any errors by using the "Back" button. Click "Finish"

In the main Account Settings window click "OK" (not pictured)
